If you’ve ever crammed a queen-size comforter into a home washer and prayed the spin cycle wouldn’t throw the machine across the room, you already know the problem. Residential washers top out around 4.5 cubic feet of capacity. That’s fine for a week of t-shirts and jeans. It’s not fine for sleeping bags, heavy work uniforms, a family’s worth of bedding, or anything that actually needs a serious wash.
Athens County has one laundromat built to handle that kind of load, and it’s not the dated coin-op you’re picturing. Highlander Laundromat in Nelsonville, OH was recently renovated from the floor up with all-new commercial machines, a clean modern interior, and enough capacity to knock out your biggest loads in a single trip.
Large-Capacity Machines That Actually Fit Your Load
The commercial front-load washers at Highlander range up to 80 pounds of capacity per machine. That means you can wash an entire set of king-size bedding, comforter, sheets, pillowcases, and mattress pad, in one cycle without forcing anything. The high-extraction spin pulls out more water than a residential washer, which cuts dryer time and leaves fabrics cleaner.
Here’s what Athens County residents regularly bring in:
- King and queen comforters, duvets, and quilts
- Sleeping bags and camping gear
- Multiple loads of family laundry done simultaneously
- Work uniforms, coveralls, and heavy-duty clothing
- Pet bedding and blankets that don’t fit at home
- Sports gear, gym bags, and team uniforms
The dryers match the washers in capacity. No more running the same comforter through three dryer cycles because it came out damp in the middle. At Highlander, one dryer cycle finishes the job.
Faster Than Any Home Laundry Setup
The math on laundromat speed versus home laundry is straightforward. At home, a typical wash cycle takes 45 minutes to an hour. Then you move it to the dryer for another 45 minutes to an hour. You can run one load at a time. If you have four loads to do on a Sunday, that’s four to six hours of rotating laundry in and out.
At Highlander, you load four machines at once. All four run simultaneously. In 90 minutes, everything is washed, dried, and folded. A full afternoon of home laundry gets compressed into one trip that takes less time than watching a movie.
The commercial dryers make a real difference too. Home dryers run at lower heat with smaller drums, so bulky items tumble poorly and come out damp. Highlander’s commercial dryers generate consistent, even heat across a larger drum. Comforters dry flat. Towels come out soft, not crunchy. You pull everything out once and it’s done, no second cycle and no damp spots.
For Ohio University students hauling laundry from dorms or off-campus housing, this is the difference between losing an entire weekend afternoon and getting everything done between classes. For families with kids in summer sports, it means showing up Monday with clean uniforms instead of rewearing Thursday’s practice shorts.
Wash, Dry, and Fold — Drop It Off, Pick It Up Clean
If you don’t want to wait at all, Highlander offers a full wash, dry, and fold drop-off service. Bring your laundry to the counter, and the team handles the rest. They wash it, dry it, fold it, and package it for pickup. No sorting, no waiting, and no transferring loads between machines.
Drop-off service is priced per pound. There’s no appointment required. Just bring your bag in during business hours and let the staff know what you need. Most loads are ready for pickup the same day or the next morning.
This option is popular with:
- Busy professionals in Athens and Nelsonville who don’t have time for laundry day
- Parents juggling kids, work, and household responsibilities
- Students who’d rather study than sit at a washer
- Anyone recovering from surgery, illness, or injury who can’t manage laundry independently
- Small business owners who need uniforms and towels cleaned on a regular schedule
The quality of a commercial wash-dry-fold service beats what most people achieve at home. Commercial machines use higher water temperatures, stronger extraction cycles, and more precise detergent dosing. Your clothes come back cleaner, and your towels come back softer.
Why Highlander Is the Best Laundromat in Athens County
Athens County residents who haven’t visited Highlander since the renovation are in for a surprise. The entire building was gutted and rebuilt. Every machine inside is new. The floors, walls, lighting, and seating areas were all replaced. It doesn’t look or feel like a typical rural Ohio laundromat.
The space is well-lit, climate-controlled, and maintained daily. There are no broken machines with “out of order” signs taped to the door. No mystery puddles on the floor. No chairs held together with duct tape. Highlander’s owner, Sage, keeps the facility at a standard that most laundromats in Southeast Ohio don’t come close to matching.
The reviews back it up. Highlander has over 127 Google reviews, and the overwhelming majority of 2026 ratings are five stars. Visitors consistently mention how clean the machines are, how modern the space feels, and how different it is from their expectations.
If you’ve been avoiding laundromats because of a bad experience somewhere else, Highlander is worth another look.
